STEP 0: Pre-Calculation Summary
Formula Used
Lift of Valve = Diameter of Port/(4*cos(Valve Seat Angle))
hmax = dp/(4*cos(α))
This formula uses 1 Functions, 3 Variables
Functions Used
cos - Cosine of an angle is the ratio of the side adjacent to the angle to the hypotenuse of the triangle., cos(Angle)
Variables Used
Lift of Valve - (Measured in Meter) - Lift of Valve is the height to which the valve is lifted during operation for the flow of gases.
Diameter of Port - (Measured in Meter) - Diameter of Port is the diameter of the opening of the port of an IC Engine.
Valve Seat Angle - (Measured in Radian) - Valve Seat Angle is the angle of the seat of a valve from the direction perpendicular to the valve length.
STEP 1: Convert Input(s) to Base Unit
Diameter of Port: 40 Millimeter --> 0.04 Meter (Check conversion here)
Valve Seat Angle: 45 Degree --> 0.785398163397301 Radian (Check conversion here)
STEP 2: Evaluate Formula
Substituting Input Values in Formula
hmax = dp/(4*cos(α)) --> 0.04/(4*cos(0.785398163397301))
Evaluating ... ...
hmax = 0.0141421356237289
STEP 3: Convert Result to Output's Unit
0.0141421356237289 Meter -->14.1421356237289 Millimeter (Check conversion here)
FINAL ANSWER
14.1421356237289 14.14214 Millimeter <-- Lift of Valve
(Calculation completed in 00.004 seconds)

Construction of Poppet valve of an IC Engine

The poppet valve consists of a disk called ‘head’ at the end of a rod called ‘stem’. The ‘face’ of the valve is a conical surface that comes in contact with a valve seat It has a face angle varying from 30° to 45°. The conical surface of the valve results in the self-centering property. There is a small margin between the head and the face. There are two reasons for providing the margin—it avoids the sharp edges and a provision is made for regrinding of the valve. The lower end of the valve stem has a groove. A spring retainer is fitted in this groove, which supports one end of the valve spring. In slow-speed engines, valves have composite construction with a cast iron head and steel stem. In high-speed engines, one-piece construction is used and valves are forged.

How to Calculate Maximum Lift of Valve given Diameter of Port and Valve Seat Angle?

Maximum Lift of Valve given Diameter of Port and Valve Seat Angle calculator uses Lift of Valve = Diameter of Port/(4*cos(Valve Seat Angle)) to calculate the Lift of Valve, Maximum lift of valve given diameter of port and valve seat angle is the maximum height to which the valve is lifted during operation for the flow of gases. Lift of Valve is denoted by hmax symbol.
