Moisture and Volatile Matter Solution

STEP 0: Pre-Calculation Summary
Formula Used
Moisture and Volatile Matter = (Dry Loss/Material Weight)*100
MVM = (W1/W2)*100
This formula uses 3 Variables
Variables Used
Moisture and Volatile Matter - Moisture and Volatile Matter is the loss in mass of the sample on heating at 105 ± 1°C under operating conditions specified.
Dry Loss - (Measured in Kilogram) - Dry Loss is loss in gm of material on drying.
Material Weight - (Measured in Kilogram) - Material Weight is weight in gm of material taken.
STEP 1: Convert Input(s) to Base Unit
Dry Loss: 12 Gram --> 0.012 Kilogram (Check conversion here)
Material Weight: 50 Gram --> 0.05 Kilogram (Check conversion here)
STEP 2: Evaluate Formula
Substituting Input Values in Formula
MVM = (W1/W2)*100 --> (0.012/0.05)*100
Evaluating ... ...
MVM = 24
STEP 3: Convert Result to Output's Unit
24 --> No Conversion Required
FINAL ANSWER

Moisture and Volatile Matter Formula

Moisture and Volatile Matter = (Dry Loss/Material Weight)*100
MVM = (W1/W2)*100

What is the procedure for determination of Moisture Content?

Weigh in a previously dried and tared dish about 5-10 g of oil or fat which has been thoroughly mixed by stirring. Loosen the lid of the dish and heat in an oven at 105 ± 1°C for 1 hour. Remove the dish from the oven and close the lid. Cool in a desiccator containing phosphorus pentoxide or equivalent dessicant and weigh. Heat in the oven for a further period of 1 hour, cool and weigh. Repeat this process until change in weight between two successive observations does not exceed 1 mg.
